A Brief Introduction to 'The Diary of a Young Girl'

'The Diary of a Young Girl' is a captivating account of journal entries recorded by the famous teen diarist and holocaust victim Annelies Marie Frank, popularly known as Anne Frank. The diary dates from 1942-44 which covers her 25 months in hiding with her family in a shelter which they named as the 'Secret Annex'. The secret diary was retrieved and kept by Miep Gies, a confidante of the Franks after their arrest. Later, she revest it to Anne's father Mr. Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the family who published it in 1947. The translation of the original Dutch book into English elevated Ann to the position of a cultural icon.

Anne Frank received the red checkered diary on her 13th birthday in 1942. It was a gift from her parents which she herself had picked out from a bookshop. But she started actual writing only two days after her birthday, hoping she would be able to confide everything to the diary. She counted the diary as her best friend and called it 'Kitty', the name of a fictional character from one of her favourite book series. Chronicling the sombre moments in hiding and rhapsodizing her sentiments was a great succour to her, oblivious to the fact that her musings would become an authentic archive on the life during the holocaust. The annal offers a lucid and evocative view of the trepidation that inflicted the Jews as well as their prospect of a peaceful world from the perspective of a teen girl. The persuasive book proffers the idea of individual freedom and right to live while points up the readers on the fostering choices and serendipity life offers to them.
